Does The Diode Laser Hair Reduction Work On All Skin Types?

Excessive body hair or even hairs on specific body parts sometimes make us uncomfortable and embarrassed.

At first, anyone resorts to shaving, plucking, & waxing their body hairs every few weeks. Still, sure, it seems unsustainable due to repeated visits to the salon, worrying about the hygienic standards while performing the procedure, and last but not least, the painful process while waxing. However, wanting a calming and permanent solution for all those unwanted body hairs is enough.

At Sasha, our best Laser hair reduction is one of the most popular procedures, as both men and women love to remove unwanted body hair permanently. It works on selective photothermolysis, where the laser light targets the hair follicles. Melanin in hair follicles absorbs excess heat from the laser light, making them inactive for further growth.

The laser system must be effective on all skin types for the best hair reduction while providing complete skin protection. As lighter skin tone has less amount of melanin when compared to dark skin tone, they are best treated with 755nm (Alexandrite) or 805nm (diode laser). On the other hand, while dark skin tone has enough melanin in their skin compared to light skin tone, they are mainly treated with 1060/1064 nm, also present in the diode laser systems.

How Does A Diode Laser Work?

Diode lasers target certain chromophores in the skin, typically melanin or blood, using the principle of selective photothermolysis. The lasers selectively heat the chromophores while sparing the healthy tissue around them. For instance, while treating undesired hair, the melanin in the hair follicles is targeted and destroyed, impairing hair regrowth. A diode laser can use a cooling system or other pain-relieving techniques to increase therapy effectiveness and patient comfort.

  • Laser energy is selectively absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle and converted to heat, diffusing to and injuring stem cells in bulbs and bulges.
  • Most hair is permanently removed.
  • Hair that does regrow is finer and lighter than before.

Does the process work for all skin types?

The laser is attracted to the melanin, or color, in your hair follicles, so the treatment works best on an individual with dark, coarse hair and pale skin; the contrast helps the laser target the hair follicles better. As per our board-certified dermatologists, it works well on all skin colors and types and almost every hair type. The one exception is fine blond hair with no melanin, so the laser can’t target it.

You should also avoid laser hair reduction for areas close to your eyes. Although the laser is safe and protection is provided, you should avoid any possible risk of damage to your eyes from the laser.
